Another smoothie today! I never used to be a smoothie person and always preferred chewing my food, but somewhere along the line that changed and smoothies are now an almost daily occurrence around these parts. Maybe that will change once the weather turns…but right now I’m happy to be enjoying smoothies and the first of autumn’s fruit all in one go!
These are the lovely plums from our baby tree last year-almost all eaten by me I think. If you’re not a smoothie person, or even if you are, you should also try my Maple-Oat Plum Crumble recipe from back then.
I haven’t received any plums in my fruit and veg deliveries from home so I’m guessing I lucked out and they’re all finished. Fortunately, there are still plums at the farmers’ markets and shops around here (and I’m sure if you live in the countryside there are plenty of foraging opportunities to be had too) so I haven’t missed out altogether.
The Victoria plums I used here are quite sweet and fairly mild in taste, but blended with banana, homemade almond milk, dates and a little ginger ( yes, again. I’m going though a ginger phase obviously…) you have a lovely creamy, just-fruity-enough smoothie which makes a great light breakfast or snack.
I think the colour’s rather pretty too!
Homemade almond (or another neutral nut) milk is pretty essential here for the best taste as the creaminess really makes this smoothie. and you just don’t get that from the commercial kind. If you haven’t yet made your own nut milk, please please do try it! It’s not difficult or time-consuming at all- you just need to remember to soak the nuts overnight. Follow the instructions in my Healthy Mocha-Hazelnut Shake post, using almonds instead of hazelnuts.
Ingredients
- 1 Frozen banana, chopped
- 1/2 C (heaping) Ripe pitted plums
- 1 C Homemade almond milk (See note above)
- 1" Pc Peeled, fresh ginger
- 1-2 Medjool dates, pitted
Instructions
- Blend everything together in a high-powered blender until completely smooth.
- Serve immediately.

That looks so delicious, I love plums!
Me too! I wish I had my own tree here in London! Though they’re not a bad price at my local farmers’ market.
How lucky you are to have those cute, fresh little plums! I will have to try this with the kind I can get at our store as I like the flavor of plums but the texture - not so much.
Aren’t they cute?! Hope you like the smoothie. I love the slight fruity/jammy taste they bring. It’s probably hard to identify it as plum but it’s yummy nonetheless.
Me either, I wasn’t into smoothies until I became obsessed with homemade nut milk awhile ago. Wow, these are gorgeous plums, I wish I have a yard of these plum trees, the most common ones here in the NW are apple trees & berries. Looks super delicious with fresh ginger & homemade almond milk…mmmmmm!
Exactly! Homemade nut milk just makes smoothies exceptional! England is probably best known for its apples at this time of year but plums are very common too.
I actually actively disliked smoothies for the longest time and then I got really into them for a couple years. Now they’ve become a once in a while thing…I think I only had 2 all summer!
This look delicious! I so love ginger in smoothies!
I hope I don’t have smoothie burnout! Though I’m sure I’ll just move onto something else delicious 😉
Beautiful recipe, Emma!
PLUM and GINGER?!?! Never even thought about that combo before!
I have a ridiculous number of plums in my kitchen right now! Near where I live is a market where fruit / veg are sold in £1 bowls, and I get so carried away and end up with lots of bowls and then way too much produce for just two people (especially as Mr B is not a big fruit eater). Plum crumble is on my agenda I think, but this smoothie will be a lovely way to use some up too
Ah yes, I’ve seen those markets before. Is the produce good? I’m never sure it would be very fresh. Crumble and smoothies are definitely the way to go to use up your surplus.
Yummy combo, can’t beat plums at this time of year!
I was actually really surprised at how much I loved this one. Nice when that happens
The little plum tree in our garden was laden with plums this year, so I’ve been indulging in lots of bowls of plum compote (one of my fave desserts ever!), plus freezing loads for the next few months. I’m still definitely in smoothie mode and your plum & ginger combo sounds lush!
I adore plum compote! Actually any fruit compote really. My Mum used to make blackberry and apple compote all the time and I loved it with yogurt as dessert.
Im not a huge fan of plums at all, but the Victoria plums from farmers markets are a completely different story. I first picked up a bunch last year out of curiosity and was hooked, they were so sweet! I have never had them in a smoothie (must try!) but thats something I have on my agenda this autumn now Ive seen your recipe! Love this!
Victoria are quite different, aren’t they? They have that slightly jammy sweetness and aren’t tart or rock solid like some other varieties seem to be.
I never though of putting plums in a smoothie - this is a nice mix from my usual berry-banana morning combo! I love the addition of ginger as well! Seems like the type of smoothie that would really wake you up in the morning! Pinned onto my smoothie board!
I used to always be a berry-banana girl too! Now I try and mix things up to keep it interesting. I really loved this one.
I missed this post! Oh Emma, this looks and sounds delish! You know I don’t like bananas, but I love the plums and especially the ginger. I am a HUGE ginger fan and in smoothies, I love the kick it gives! Love the earthy color as well.
You and me both Brandi! Ginger-obsessed here!
I always forget you’re not a banana lover. The banana flavour doesn’t come through here, it just adds creaminess and a little sweetness. I’m sure you could sub with a handful of cashews and an extra date though!
Oh, I like smoothies very much, too! This seems like a nice combination I haven’t tried yet. Like you mentioned, I am a berry-banana smoothie fan as well so I think this will be something new for me. I used to be a gluten-free vegan so smoothies were my everything. 😉 After reading some articles that restaurants can have a gluten-free sign and don’t have to be really gluten-free, I started with healthy lifestyle and I don’t have to pay so much attention to all the ingredients that are in my meal. I am a social person and I like going out, visiting restaurants and trying new things so now the options of places where I can go are not as limited as before. Despite the fact that I can eat more things for breakfast now, smoothies are still a part of my morning routine. Thank you for this post! It brought a new recipe to my list of things that I will definitely try.
Thank you Serena! I hope you like the recipe when you try it.
And great news that you don’t have to be so strict with your diet anymore!
It as a very delicious smoothy! So yum yum too!
Love plums!
This smoothie has a ‘chocolate milkshake’ look about it!!!!
It’s definitely as creamy and delicious as a chocolate milkshake!
